. an update on the aftermath of the elementary school massacre in newtown, connecticut. herse hearses are making their way through the town today. vice president biden is meeting in the next hour with law enforcement representatives as well as cabinet members. what he's doing is leading the president's effort to come up with new proposals to reduce gun violence. also today attorney general eric holder, he is meeting with law enforcement officials and first responders in newtown. we have learned new information about the gunman's mother. friends say that nancy lanza went on vacation alone at a resort in new hampshire days before the shooting. she checked out last thursday afternoon. her son killed her and went on his murderous rampage friday morning. we've also been able to piece together details about the gunman, adam lanza's mother nan nancy. haven't heard much from the father. mary snow is taking a closer look at a strange relationship between the father and son. >> his home is less than hour away from where his son adam oepd fire in sandy hook elementary school, but a person that k

rampage as we remember more of the young victims. peter doocy is live in newtown. what exactly is the medical examiner trying to prove or look into here? >> reporter: jenna, the chief medical examiner, wayne carver, has recruit ad geneticist from you con, the university of connecticut, if there is known dizzy or disorder could be associated with the kind of murderous behavior that adam lanza showed last friday. dr. carver doesn't know for sure if adam had asperger's, but if he did that would not be associated with this kind of violence. he wants a geneticist to help figure out what kind of disorder s 25-year-old marine from sandy hook, that adam lanza thought his mom cared more for kindergartners she volunteered with last year than they did for him. he may have gone to their first grade classroom on friday when he found his mom was trying to send him to a mental institution. this marine told foxnews.com, quote, from what i've been told, adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and her plans to have him committed. adam was apparently very upset about this
will announce a task force led by vice president biden to develop a policy response to the newtown, connecticut shooting. the president is not expected to make any policy decisions but lay out a path forward on a process to come up with some policy proposals. on sunday though he did promise in newtown that he would use whatever power this office holds to prevent future tragedies. yesterday white house spokesman jay carney said that could include reexamining some gun laws. carney said the president supports senator dianne feinstein's attempt to revive the assault weapons ban as well as a ban on high-capacity magazines. he also supports closing the so-called gun show loophole. any effort though at new restrictions on guns will kick off a new fight in washington. the nra spent $18.6 million supporting and opposing candidates during the 2012 cycle. according to the sun life found case, 51% of the numbers of the new congress have received funding from the national rifle association's political action committee at some point in their political careers. the nra is known for staying silent, running out

on the iraq war. congress should bring the victims of newtown up to capitol hill who would be willing to call for serious changes in gun policy. i think shows like this show have to focus on the fact we have a new toub that occurs in this country every single day. 30 americans on average are killed every day from handgun violence. i think we need massive protests against irresponsible retailers like walmart who sell assault weapons and make them available to anyone -- pretty much anybody that asks. the question is not whether or not we'll have change. the question is whether or not progressives, independents and fair-minded republicans will form a national based movement that will really expose the need for this. one place we might start is asking congress if they believe in the self-defense argue am, why don't they allow guns in congress? >> the thing is polls are mixed on gun control. a majority favors stronger gun control, but a majority also says we shouldn't ban assault weapons. so how does the president frame his case to voters so they support him? >> i think, first, he's got to do like
